At the heart of every great nation lies the power of unity, and Adebayo Tasleemah, a standout first-place winner in this year’s KAF Essay Competition, eloquently captures this spirit in her thoughtful essay.
In her piece, she explores the transformative power of football, using the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament as a shining example of how sports can foster peace, togetherness, and acceptance, even in the most diverse of societies like Nigeria.
Through her compelling words, Tasleemah demonstrates that beyond the goals scored and the celebrations, football has the unique ability to bridge divides, create dialogue, and unify people from all walks of life, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation.

USING THE RECENT AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT AS AN EXAMPLE, DISCUSS HOW SPORTS CAN HELP BRING PEACE, TOGETHERNESS, AND ACCEPTANCE IN DIVERSE PLACES LIKE NIGERIA
Football, also known as soccer, originated from Great Britain. It is a game where two teams compete with each other to get the upper hand, aiming to see a round, bouncy leather ball enter the opponents net. Both teams strive diligently to emerge as victors, avoiding the fate of being vanquished. Football is a game people get paid to play and people pay to watch. However football transcends what people are paid for and what people pay for.
Football is not just a game for entertainment but a tool for tolerance which promotes peace, acceptance, harmony, and unity in places where it is least expected. Places as diverse as Nigeria.
Football is a unifying force that fosters peace and unity. The recent Africa Cup Of Nations [AFCON] tournament is a beautiful example of how football can be a unifying force rather than a dividing one.
Firstly, football encourages teamwork and cooperation. Players in a team must work together to achieve success despite being from different cultures. An example was when our national team in the AFCON tournament, in the match against South Africa, their cooperation reflected on spectators and inspired communities off the field to be more united. Nigeria is a country that boasts over 250 ethnic groups and more than 500 languages. Also known for containing three main religions; Islam, Christianity, and Traditional. No matter how great this may sound, diversity often leads to adversity.
Nigeria, despite being a country with cultural diversity often puts their differences behind when it comes to achieving a common goal or facing a common enemy. An example was with two of my neighbors; an Igbo Christian and a Hausa Muslim, who had political differences, belonging to opposing parties, during Nigeria’s match against South Africa, they celebrated together after the victory. This marked a turning point in their relationship, and laid a foundation for a permanent one. During Nigeria’s match against Ivory Coast they both shed tears over the loss.
In addition, football fosters dialogues. People come together and discussions are held about the game, tactics, and players. These discussions lead to bringing up perspectives and ideas for the development of the community.
In conclusion, football has the ability to bring people together, bridge divides, and inspire progress which makes it a valuable asset for promoting peace and acceptance in diverse places. With the government’s continued support football can be a driving force for social development in the years to come.
